Albert Huie had painted all his life from the young age of 18 years old. He had his 1st one man show at the age of 23. In 1943 he held his first major one-man exhibition at the Institute of Jamaica. From the proceeds of this show, he went on to study at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Canada. He also studied Aesthetics under Reid MaCallum at the University of Toronto. In 1947 he was awarded the British Council Scholarship and went to Camberwell, London to do research in painting techniques. In 1953 he was presented with the International Award for his contribution in the Spanish Biennale held in Havana, Cuba. Another of his paintings “Thursday Night” received the ‘Prize for Painting’ in the Annual National Exhibition in 1961. His painting “The counting lesson” received an award at the exhibition of the Gallery of Science & Art, at the ‘New York World’s Fair’ in 1939. A retrospective of his work, Albert Huie in Jamaican Collections, was staged at the National Gallery in 1979. Albert Huie has held numerous exhibitions in Jamaica & abroad and is locally and internationally acclaimed as a key figure in Jamaican and African Diaspora art. His work is well represented in the National Gallery‘s collection, which includes masterpieces such as Crop Time, The Vendor (1939), Noon (1943), and his 1940 Portrait of Edna Manley Huie is often Described as the father of Jamaican painting. Although he produced folkloric genre pieces, his main concern was with his island's rich landscape and the physical beauty of its people.
